The 7th House in Astrology: Relationships, Marriage, and Partnerships
James Olivier
Astrologer & Researcher
The 7th house sits directly opposite the 1st house — the house of self. Where the 1st house is about identity and individual expression, the 7th is about the other person: who you partner with, how you partner, and what you seek and project in your significant relationships.
It's often called the house of marriage. But that's an oversimplification. The 7th house governs any committed one-on-one relationship: romantic partnerships, business partners, close collaborators, and yes, open enemies (who are, in a sense, your most intimate adversaries).
What the 7th house rules
The 7th house describes:
- The type of partner you're drawn to
- The qualities you seek in one-on-one relationships
- How you approach commitment and long-term partnership
- What you tend to project onto others (what you don't own in yourself)
- Business partnerships and collaborations
- Open enemies and adversaries
The sign on your 7th house cusp (the Descendant) is directly opposite your Rising sign — and often describes qualities you admire in others but haven't fully integrated in yourself. If you have Scorpio rising, your Descendant is in Taurus: you may be drawn to partners who are stable, grounded, and sensual, qualities that complement your Scorpio intensity.
Planets in the 7th house
Sun in the 7th house — Your identity and self-expression are strongly activated through partnership. You may feel most fully yourself in relationship with a significant other. There's a pull toward collaboration, and marriage or committed partnership tends to be a central theme of your life.
Moon in the 7th house — Emotional security is deeply tied to being in relationship. You feel most at home when partnered. The type of partner you seek tends to be nurturing and emotionally available — or, in the unintegrated version, you repeatedly attract emotionally volatile partners as a projection of your own emotional world.
Mercury in the 7th house — You're drawn to partners who are intellectually stimulating. Communication is a crucial component of any relationship you're serious about. You may also attract people who challenge your ideas, which can be stimulating or exhausting depending on the dynamic.
Venus in the 7th house — Venus in its natural house: a strong indicator of relationship-orientation and a natural gift for partnership. You tend to attract loving, harmonious partners. There's a genuine pleasure in relating, and relationships are a priority throughout your life.
Mars in the 7th house — You attract dynamic, assertive, sometimes aggressive partners. The relationship style tends to be passionate and high-energy — and sometimes combative. You may project your own Mars energy onto partners, attracting people who are more overtly driven and assertive than your own presentation suggests.
Jupiter in the 7th house — Generally a positive placement for partnership. Partners tend to be expansive, generous, or bring opportunities. Relationships are a source of growth. The shadow: you may attract partners who overextend, or expect too much from relationships to deliver on their own.
Saturn in the 7th house — One of the most significant Saturn placements for relationships. You take partnership seriously — perhaps too seriously, sometimes avoiding commitment out of fear of getting it wrong. Partners may be older, more established, or carry a Saturnian quality (responsible, reserved, authoritative). Lessons around commitment, maturity, and long-term devotion are central.
Uranus in the 7th house — Unconventional relationships are the norm. You may be drawn to partners who are unusual, independent, or non-conformist — or you may resist conventional partnership structures. Relationships often involve sudden beginnings and endings, or unusual arrangements.
Neptune in the 7th house — The planet of idealization in the house of partnership is beautiful and challenging. You tend to see partners through a romanticized lens. At its best: extraordinary compassion and spiritual connection with partners. The shadow: dissolution of self in relationship, difficulty seeing partners clearly, susceptibility to deception or self-deception.
Pluto in the 7th house — Relationships are transformative, intense, and involve significant power dynamics. You attract partners who trigger your deepest patterns. The relationship often involves profound change — in you, in them, or in the structure of the partnership itself. Power struggles are possible; profound intimacy and transformation are also possible.
The Descendant sign and what you seek in partners
Your Descendant — the sign on the 7th house cusp — describes what you seek and project in relationships:
- Aries Descendant (Libra Rising): Drawn to bold, independent, direct partners. You may project your own assertiveness onto them.
- Taurus Descendant (Scorpio Rising): You seek stable, sensual, reliable partners — the groundedness that balances Scorpio's intensity.
- Gemini Descendant (Sagittarius Rising): You want partners who are intellectually curious, communicative, and flexible.
- Cancer Descendant (Capricorn Rising): You seek nurturing, emotionally available partners — the warmth that balances Capricorn's pragmatism.
- Leo Descendant (Aquarius Rising): You're drawn to confident, warm, creative partners who bring personal warmth to your more detached nature.
- Virgo Descendant (Pisces Rising): You seek grounded, practical, attentive partners who help you navigate the material world.
The 7th house and projection
One of the most important psychological insights about the 7th house is that we often experience its themes through projection: what we haven't owned in ourselves, we attract in partners.
The Capricorn with Neptune in the 7th who keeps attracting unreliable, chaotic partners — often needs to look at where in themselves they are avoiding the Neptunian. The person with Saturn in the 7th who only attracts controlling partners — may need to look at their own relationship with control and authority.
The 7th house shows you your partners. But it also shows you yourself, reflected back through the people you choose.
